Hua Hin Regatta 2016

The conditions at Hua Hin were very windy with choppy seas so it was a very physical and demanding regatta.  Five of our seven sailors in the Optimist Class qualified for the A fleet.  Our top sailor Natthapong (Max) Young-gnam finished 24th overall placing him 18th overall in Thailand. Our other sailors also coped will in these conditions and finished 31st, 34th, & 35th with our youngest sailor finishing 51st from a fleet of 60 sailors.

PYSC sailor Anurak (Tae) Kulaak won the B fleet with fellow sailor, Natthapon (Nak) coming 10th overall from a fleet of 60 sailors and received Trophies from the King’s Representative – a very prestigious occasion for both of them and our Sailing Team.

PKCR Dinghy Series 2015 Winners

The final of the Phuket King’s Cup Dinghy Series, part of the renowned Phuket Kings’ Cup Regatta, took place on the 24-25 October 2015. (The other weekends involved in the Regatta Series took place in June and August 2015.) The first day of the dinghy racing saw some light winds with just enough breeze enabling the Racing Officers to get all three races in as planned. On the Sunday, there was an increase in wind giving the sailors more favourable and fun racing conditions to enjoy.

Phuket Youth Sailing Club were excited to enter many of their talented young sailors into the regatta and were delighted when the club’s sailors came first, second and third overall in the weekend event in the Optimists class and winning the PKCR Dinghy Series with some 45 entries in all. Congratulations to current defending champion, Nattapong (Max) Yoang-ngam on winning the series once again. Congratulations also to Thanakon (Paton) Maefildea in 2nd place and Phawat (Tong) Phongwilai in 3rd place overall.

Their new wave of trainee sailors also had a highly successful first series with their sailors taking first, second & third place in the beginners category.

In the Laser Fleet, 13 year old Kartoon (Toon) Jundet had an outstanding weekend with a win in all six of his races but it wasn’t enough to stop defending champion, Teerapong (New) Tohkratoak (aged 18), one of his fellow club sailors, ultimately winning the series.

The winners of the series are due to be awarded their trophies by the King’s representative at The Royal Awards Ceremony on the 12th December 2015.

Phuket Youth Sailing Club sailors are now very much looking forward to competing in the Phuket Kings’ Cup Regatta International Dinghy Class in both Optimists and Toppers from the 5-12 December 2015.

Phuket Young Sailing Talent

Nattapong (Max) Yuang-ngam and Cartoon (Toon) Jundet, from Phuket Youth Sailing Club (PYSC), have had a personal invite to attend the National Optimist qualifier at Sattahip Dec 20/21 2014 for selection to represent Thailand in the 28th SEA Games 2015.

The Southeast Asian Games (also know as the SEA Games), is a biennial multi-sport event involving participants from the 11 countries of Southeast Asia. The games is under regulation of the Southeast Asian Games Federation with supervision by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Olympic Council of Asia.

The Optimist is a small, single-handed sailing dinghy intended for use by children up to the age of 15. It is one of the most popular sailing dinghies in the world with over 200,000 boat officially registered with the class and many more built but never registered.

The Optimist is the biggest youth racing class it the world. As well as the annual world championship the class also has six continental championships, attended by a total of over 850 sailors a year.

Max & Toon have been training with the PYSC for the last 5 years and their sailing talent has been recognised through recent success in the PKCR Dinghy Series when they achieved 1st & 2nd place overall in the series event and again in the PKCR International Dinghy Regatta, gaining a 4th & 6th place in the Optimist Class against some of the top sailors in Thailand.

The invitation to attend the qualifiers is a great accolade to the club and a great accomplishment to these young sailors who live in children’s home, and only train once a week against fellow sailors who train every day.

Phuket Youth Sailing Club is a non-profit organisation and for its finances (dinghies, sailing gear, participating in local, national and international regattas) relies on donations and sponsorships.

“Thanks to the generous support from our sponsors, we have already come a long way. However, as with all amateur sports, finding stable financial support is the greatest obstacle to the best intentions so we need to find other ways to support the programme” says Katy Gooch, Club Coach.
